Taper vs Fade โ What's the Difference?
Taper
- โขHair gradually shortens but does NOT reach skin
- โขEnds with a short length, not bare skin
- โขMore conservative look โ suits formal environments
- โขLess maintenance required
Fade
- โขHair shortens AND reaches skin (bare) at the bottom
- โขRequires a bald clipper or zero-gapped blade at skin line
- โขMore modern, sharp look
- โขNeeds touch-ups every 1โ2 weeks to stay sharp
The 4 Main Types of Taper Fade
- โLow Taper Fade โ fade starts just above the ear. Conservative, clean, works with any hair length on top.
- โMid Taper Fade โ fade starts at the midpoint of the sides, around the temples. The most balanced look.
- โHigh Taper Fade โ fade starts above the temples, close to the top. More dramatic contrast.
- โSkin Taper Fade (Bald Taper) โ fade goes all the way to bare skin. Maximum contrast.
How to Ask for a Taper Fade at the Barbershop
Tell your barber: the height (low, mid, or high), whether you want skin or just short at the bottom, and what length you want on top. Example: "Low skin fade, leave a 3 on top." The clearer you are, the better the result. Most barbers prefer when clients know what they want โ it speeds up the chair.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is a taper fade the same as a fade?
No. A fade goes down to bare skin. A taper stops short of skin โ it tapers the hair short but leaves some length at the bottom. Both use the same gradual blending technique.
How often should I cut a taper fade?
Every 2โ3 weeks for a skin fade to stay sharp. Low tapers without skin can last 3โ4 weeks before looking grown out.
What hair type works best for a taper fade?
Taper fades work on all hair types โ straight, wavy, curly, and coily. The technique adjusts for hair texture. Coarser, curlier hair actually shows fade lines more dramatically.
