How to Cut a Taper Fade

The taper fade is the cut most barbershops do 40+ times a day. Getting it consistently clean — every client, every time — comes down to guard progression, blending motion, and checking your work. Here is the full technique.

Tools Required

  • Primary clipper — Wahl Magic Clip or Andis Master (both zero-gap capable)
  • Balding clipper — Wahl 5-Star Balding for skin-close finish
  • T-outliner trimmer — for edge cleanup
  • Guards: 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4
  • Clipper comb for cross-checking blends
  • Spray bottle with water

The Taper Fade Technique

  1. 1
    Establish the fade line height
Decide with the client: low (above ear), mid (temple level), or high (above temple). Mark it mentally before you cut a single stroke. This decision dictates every pass that follows.
  2. 2
    Remove the bulk
Use a #2 or #3 from the neckline up to below the fade line. Move fast — this is just bulk removal. Keep passes even and consistent.
  3. 3
    Set the skin line
Use your balding clipper or zero-gapped clipper on bare skin from the neckline up to just below where the fade starts — about 1/2 inch of skin. This anchors the fade.
  4. 4
Blend #1 into the skin line
Work the #1 guard just above the skin line using a scooping/flicking motion. This creates the first blend transition.
  5. 5
Blend #1.5 into the #1 zone
Move up slightly and blend the 1.5 into the 1 zone. Each pass should overlap the previous by about half.
  6. 6
Blend #2 into the #1.5 zone
Repeat — #2 blends into #1.5. You are building a gradient, not cutting hard steps.
  7. 7
Continue up to your chosen guard size for sides
If sides are a #3 or #4, blend from #2 up through each size. Check constantly by stepping back and looking from the front.
  8. 8
    Cross-check the blend
Use a flat comb held against the sides and check from multiple angles. Any hard lines will be visible. Fix them now — they show up more after the client leaves.
  9. 9
    Line up edges
Switch to T-outliner. Clean the hairline, temples, and sideburns. This is what clients actually remember about the cut.
PRO TIP

Pro fix: If you see a hard line after blending, go one guard size down and use the very edge of the blade (not the full blade) to feather it out. This fixes 90% of blend lines.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the best clipper for taper fades?
The Wahl Magic Clip Cordless is the most popular fade clipper in professional shops — 9.8/10 in our rankings. Its adjustable taper lever lets you micro-blend without changing guards. The Andis Master is preferred for coarser hair.
How do you blend a taper fade without lines?
Use a scooping/flicking motion at the end of each upward pass. This feathers the blend instead of creating a hard line. Always blend adjacent guard sizes — never skip a size.
How long does a taper fade take?
An experienced barber cuts a clean taper fade in 15–25 minutes. Beginners should budget 45–60 minutes and not rush the blend — speed comes with repetition.
What guard do you start a fade with?
Most barbers start with a #2 for initial bulk removal, then work down to skin. Some start lower with a #1 if the client wants a tighter fade.
