Scissor Over Comb Technique

Scissor over comb is the foundation of professional barbering. It gives more control than clippers on textured hair, allows precise shaping on the top, and produces the smoothest blends when transitioning from clipper-cut sides. Here is the complete technique.

When to Use Scissor Over Comb

  • Top and crown shaping where clipper passes leave marks.
  • Blending the transition zone between clipper-cut sides and the top.
  • Cutting curly and textured hair that compresses under clipper pressure.
  • Finishing passes when you need to remove just 2–3mm without taking too much.
  • Any section where the clipper angle or size is too aggressive for the desired result.

Scissor Over Comb — Step by Step

  1. 1
Position the comb at your cutting angle
Hold the comb with the teeth pointing slightly upward, resting lightly on the scalp. The angle of the comb determines the finished length — steeper angle = more length left, flatter angle = shorter result.
  2. 2
Lift the hair out from the scalp
Pass the comb through the hair, lifting it out perpendicular to the scalp. The hair that extends beyond the comb teeth is what you will cut.
  3. 3
Position the scissors above the comb
Rest the lower blade of the scissors on the spine of the comb. The scissors should be nearly parallel to the comb, with the tips pointing in the direction you are moving.
  4. 4
Cut in a smooth, rhythmic motion
Open and close the scissors while moving the comb and scissors together through the section. The rhythm should be steady — one comb pass, one cut. Do not stop and start.
  5. 5
Check your angle at each section
The comb angle naturally changes as you move around the head. Be deliberate about maintaining consistent angle throughout a section so you do not create steps or uneven areas.
  6. 6
    Blend into clipper work
Where scissor work meets clipper-cut sections, use an open-lever clipper pass over the same comb angle to match lengths precisely at the transition.
COMMON MISTAKE

Most beginners move the scissors without moving the comb — this chops a straight line instead of blending. The scissors and comb must move together in the same direction at the same speed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What scissors are best for scissor over comb?
A 6–6.5 inch straight shear with convex blades works best. Thinning shears are useful for the final blend pass but should not be used as the primary cutting tool.
Can you scissor over comb with hair clippers instead of scissors?
The same principle applies — the comb lifts the hair and the clipper cuts what extends beyond it. This is essentially how clipper over comb works and produces very similar results.
