How to Do a Comb Over Fade
The comb over fade combines a classic side-parted comb over on top with a fade on the sides and back. The part must be clean, the fade must support the swept direction of the top, and the transition from fade to comb over must look intentional. Here is the complete technique.

Comb Over Fade — Step by Step
- 1Confirm the part placement with the clientAsk the client where they naturally part their hair. Most people have a natural part — work with it, not against it. Mark the part before any cutting.
- 2Cut the fade side first (opposite the part)The side opposite the comb over direction gets the full fade treatment. This is the shorter, more exposed side. Cut this to the client's desired fade height and style (low, mid, or high).
- 3Cut the part sideThe side that the hair combs toward still gets a fade, but slightly less aggressive than the opposite side. This keeps the volume for the comb over while still providing a clean taper.
- 4Define the part line with T-outlinerCreate a clean, sharp parting line using the corner of a T-outliner. Run it along the natural part, creating a crisp channel in the hair. This is the signature detail of the comb over fade.
- 5Cut the top lengthThe top should be long enough to comb over. Use scissors and comb, leaving maximum length on the heavy side of the part and shorter on the lighter side. This builds the natural fall of the comb over.
- 6Style and checkApply a small amount of pomade or styling product and comb the hair over in the natural part direction. The swept hair should sit naturally. If it fights the direction, the cut is fighting the natural growth pattern.
PRO TIP
The part line is the focal point of the entire cut. Spend extra time making it straight and clean. A wobbly or blurry part line undermines an otherwise good comb over fade — clients notice it immediately in the mirror.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the difference between a comb over fade and an undercut?
An undercut has a clear disconnect — a very short side with no fade blend into the top. A comb over fade uses a gradual fade that transitions into the top length, creating a softer, more integrated look.
What product is best for a comb over fade?
A medium-hold pomade for a clean finish, or a matte clay for a more textured look. Avoid heavy waxes on fine hair — they weigh the comb over flat.
