Motor: Brushless vs Rotary
The BaByliss FX870 Boost+ runs a brushless motor at 6,800 RPM. BOOST+ is the name of the upgrade, not the motor type — this catalogue had it recorded as rotary until 2026-10-25, which was wrong. Brushless holds speed under load instead of dragging when the blade meets dense hair, and has no brushes to wear out. The Wahl Magic Clip uses a conventional rotary motor optimized for smooth, consistent fade blending rather than raw cutting speed. In practice: on medium-density hair neither motor shows a meaningful difference. On very thick, coarse, or dense hair, the BOOST+ has a slight advantage. For the majority of clients — including most fade work — Wahl's motor is fully sufficient.
Battery Life: 120+ min vs 100 min
The BaByliss wins this, but by less than it looks and it is not the class leader. At 120+ minutes the FX870 Boost+ runs about a fifth longer than the Wahl Magic Clip, which Wahl rates at 100+ minutes. At 15–20 minutes per client that is 6–8 clients against 5–6 before a charge. Two clippers in our own lineup run considerably longer — the JRL Onyx at 300 minutes and the Andis Recon Vector at 240 — so if runtime is the deciding spec, neither of these two is the answer. For barbers doing 10+ clients per day without a charge break, BaByliss is the practical choice. Both clippers can run on charge.
Blades: Soft Blends vs Crisp Edges
This is the difference the spec sheet hides. The Magic Clip ships with Wahl's Stagger-Tooth blade (02161) — the teeth sit at alternating heights, which breaks up a hard line instead of cutting it in, and the pitch changes audibly with the amount of hair entering the blade. That feedback is why it is the blade most often recommended for learning to fade: it is forgiving of a pass that went slightly too deep. The BaByliss runs a conventional taper blade. It is rigid and cuts cleanly from the first pass, and both clippers are zero-gap capable, but a taper blade leaves exactly the line you gave it — an advantage when edging, a liability while blending.
